Agar Powder

Agar Powder (Technical agar/Agar-Agar/Gum agar) 

Used to make a firm Gel for use in experiments, or as a plain base for additional nutrient addition in microbiology.

(Not to be confused with Nutrient Agar CUL-050-350/CUL-050-375).

To make into a solution:

• Mix 1.5 g of agar with 10 ml of water into a paste.
• Slowly add more water with stirring until the volume is 100 ml.
• Heat the mixture on a boiling water bath to 95°C in the required container. This preliminary heating can be omitted if the agar will then be sterilised, unless it is necessary to decant the agar into smaller containers prior to autoclaving.
• NOTE: Without additional nitrients this agar will not sustain growth of microbial cultures.

• Solubility: soluble in boiling water
• Particle Size: min 95% through 80 mesh (177 Microns)
• Gel Strenght (1.5%/15h): >900g/cm3
• Congealing Point: 35-41 deg C
• pH (1.5%): 6.0-8.0
• Loss on Drying: <22.0%
• Ash on DM: <1.5%
• Insoluble Matter: <1.0%
• Acid Insoluble ash on DM: <1.5%
• Starch: not detectable
• Gelatin and other proteins: not detectable
• Water Absorption: min 5 times
• Arsenic (As): <3mg/Kg
• Lead (Pb): <5mg/Kg
• mercury (Hg): <1mg/kg
• Cadmium (Cd): <1mg/Kg

Total Plate Count: Mould & Yeasts: E-Coli: not detected
Salmonella: not detected

NOTE: This is generally unsuitable as a culture media as it lacks nutrients needed for growth. For culturing bacteria you should use CUL-050-350 as a general purpose nutrient media (other specific nutrient medias are also available).
