Nutrient Agar - 500g
Powdered culture media for preparing plates or solutions for the cultivation of bacterial or fungal cultures.
General purpose medium suitable for cultivating organisms with minimal nutritional requirements, including those isolated from air, water, or dust.
Question: Having made my agar powder into solution it will not melt again at 50°C, as required for a practical. How do I re-melt it?
Answer: Agar typically solidifies at around 30-40°C, but it can remain firm at temperatures as high as 65°C or so and will often not melt again fully until the temperature reaches 85°C to 95°C (depending on type). This property is known as hysteresis.
You need to bring the solidified agar up to 85-95°C by standing the bottle in an appropriate water bath, and then allow it cool to 50°C, maintaining it at 50°C in a second water bath, at which temperature it should remain liquid.
