Escherichia coli bacteria K12 strain - Live

Supplied as a culture in a glass bottle.

Lac+  (lactose fermenting) culture.

Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium of the genus Escherichia that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms.

It is facultatively (optionally) anaerobic - meaning it can switch between anaerobic and aerobic respiration depending on conditions.

All bacteria cultures supplied have been selected for school use and checked for purity before dispatch by the producer. Although considered to be non-pathogenic, the possibility exists of mutation, accidental contamination, or over-sensitivity of an individual to a particular organism. It is therefore important that all cultures are viewed as being potentially dangerous and are handled and treated accordingly.

Cultures are supplied labelled, on agar slopes in screw top vials, and identified as being gram positive (+ve) or negative (-ve).

Storage and shelf life

Shelf life approx 3-4 weeks

Can be kept at room temperature (this prevents condensation forming that can contaminate the cultures when stored in the fridge).

What is the difference between E. Coli K12 Strain and E. Coli B Strain?

K12 is not susceptible to T4 bacteriaphage where as B strain is.

K12 is a motile bacteria, posessing flagella, B strain is not motile.

K12 is generally the most used strain for basic molecular and microbiological teaching and models, B strain is generally used for protein production in industry.
