Kinetic Theory Model

A kinetic theory model, to help with the study of motion and behaviour of molecules in gases, by providing a visual representation of molecular movement.
The apparatus consists of a base unit containing a low voltage electric motor, with a clear vertical tube projecting from the top of the base, above a vibrating platform. Small steel spheres, representing gas molecules, are placed into the tube, so they sit on the platform, and a lightweight disc or float is then dropped down the tube on top of the spheres. When the motor vibrates the platform, it causes the metal spheres to vibrate and bounce randomly around and off each other. The faster the motor speed, the more violently the spheres vibrate and the larger the volume the spheres occupy - representing an increase in gas temperature. Increasing the weight of the top disc-float (e.g. by adding another float or light weight) represents an increase in gas pressure, causing the vibrating molecules (spheres) to become more compressed together and therefore occupy a smaller volume.
Includes a variable control switch to alter the speed of the motor, and safety sockets to attach 4 mm plug leads. Requires a 6-9 V DC laboratory power supply, capable of providing a current of up to 2.5 Amps. Supplied with steel spheres and 2 floats.
