Paramecium Caudatum

Paramecium caudatum (30ml) - The 'slipper animalcule' named after the resemblance of its pellicle to the shape of a slipper. This is a freshwater ciliate which is easy and quick to culture, making it a popular model organism.

Paramecium are covered with rows of cilia with which they propel themselves through the water and drive bacteria towards their mouth.

 Although the organism is highly motile our cultures often contain sufficiently dense populations for continual observation under the microscope.

Paramecium will be shipped directly from our supplier, Mon-Thurs only.

 

Care: On arrival remove lid to allow air into the jar.

Cultures will last for up to a week in the jar supplied. Should they be needed after this then they should be cultured as shown below:

Growth medium:  Hay infusion medium

Temperature: 22°C

Light requirement: No light requirement
