Leslie's Cube

A classic piece of apparatus to demonstrate the variation in radiant heat output from different types of surfaces. The apparatus consists of a metal cube with a stoppered hole at the top for filling with very hot water. The four outward facing vertical faces have different surfaces; one each with dull black, shiny black, white, and bare metal finishes. Comparisons of the varying heat radiated from each surface can then be made, e.g. using an infrared probe, infrared thermometer, thermopile etc.
