Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer, with around 5-10% of all breast cancers being inherited. Mutations in the breast cancer 1 (BRCA1) gene greatly increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. This gene is found on chromosome 17 and is normally responsible for DNA repair and is known as a tumour suppressor gene. Mutations in BRCA1 are dominant and so the presence of one copy of a mutated form can cause an increased risk of cancer.
This experiment will test DNA of members of a family where the grandmother (generation 2) and her daughter (generation 3) both developed breast cancer - both had a mutation in their BRCA1 gene.
Each kit includes enough DNA, agarose gel, electrophoresis buffer and DNA stain for up to 8 groups of students (8 gels).
Also required is a horizontal electrophoresis system with power supply and pipettes.
Whole experiment takes less than 1 hour
Great for introducing genetic diseases and genetic screening
to students
Works perfectly with Cleaver Scientific electrophoresis
equipment
