This kit contains Pyrolytic Graphite which is a remarkable material, it is a form of specially deposited graphite that has extreme diamagnetic properties. It is strongly repelled by both the N and S poles of a powerful magnet and can exhibit this behaviour by levitating over a group of rare earth (neodymium) magnets. To make the material levitate, a small piece - typically less than 1mm thick and 6mm square - is placed above a minimum of four square or circular magnets whose poles are arranged to give an alternate N/S pole configuration. This kit contains 16 magnets (4x4 matrix) together with a steel base plate and a sample of graphite.
