Modern domestic electrical systems use Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) to protect house wiring from excessive currents which would cause overheating and possible fires in the building. They have replaced fuses for mains wiring protection although fuses are still used in appliance plugs and other lower current situations. MCBs are usually Thermal Magnetic Circuit Breakers, which use a combination of bimetallic strips (thermal) and solenoids (magnetic) to provide the protection required. This apparatus demonstrates the action of an MCB, and will prove invaluable for showing applications of electromagnetic devices (the solenoid) and bi-metal strips, as well as bringing them all together to demonstrate the key principles of the modern domestic circuit breaker. The apparatus runs on safe, low-voltage DC and shows both a slow overload which operates the thermal trip together with a current surge overload operating the solenoid trip. The unit is contained in a robust tray with acrylic protective cover and requires a 12V DC supply through 4mm sockets. Dimensions: 285 x 200 x 80 mm (l x w x h). Weight: 1.080 kg.Applications include:• Heating effect of a current• Thermal expansion• Magnetic effect of a current• Electro-mechanical devices• Domestic electricity
